Our team of radiation oncologists is made up of leading physicians who strive to bring you the best care possible, creating an individualized plan specific to your cancer.

In our radiation oncology unit, our specialists use electromagnetic energy to change human tissue, targeting cancer cells to damage them so they no longer divide. Through this process, malignant cell growth can be slowed or stopped entirely.

What to expect during your first consultation

Your first appointment, or consultation, will be initiated by a referral from your medical oncologist, surgeon, or other physician directly involved in your cancer diagnosis and treatment. During the first visit, you will meet with the Radiation Oncology physician, who will review your records, examine you, and then discuss with you what role radiation can provide in the treatment of your cancer. You can expect to spend between 1 to 2 hours for this visit.

Treatment planning and CT Simulation

Before your treatment is started, it must be planned by your care team. Treatment planning includes a ‘simulation’ or mock-up of the treatment field, using a CT scanner located in the Radiation Oncology department. Special marks will be put on your skin in order to be able to set up your treatment once it is ready to begin. The CT images are used to determine the best possible plan that will deliver the highest dose to the tumor area, while avoiding as much healthy tissue as possible. This is an extremely important and complex part of the planning process and requires a sophisticated computer to calculate the dose. You can expect to spend between 1 to 2 hours for this visit.
