Breast Cancer Awareness Month – The Importance of Screening and Support

Prevention & Awareness

September 24, 2025

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time dedicated not only to raising awareness about breast cancer but also to emphasizing the importance of screenings and the power of support. While breast cancer is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers in women, awareness campaigns this month serve as an important reminder that early detection saves lives—and that support for patients and families makes all the difference.

The Importance of Screening

Breast cancer often has no symptoms in its early stages, which makes regular screenings crucial. Mammograms remain the most effective tool for early detection, helping to identify cancer before it can be felt or cause symptoms.

The American Cancer Society recommends:

  • Women 40 and older should have the option to begin annual mammograms.

  • Women 45 to 54 should receive mammograms every year.

  • Women 55 and older may switch to every two years, or continue yearly screenings.

While these are general guidelines, every individual’s risk factors are unique. Talking with your healthcare provider about your personal and family history is an important step in deciding when to start and how often to screen.

Supporting Those Affected by Cancer

Cancer impacts more than just the person diagnosed—it touches families, friends, and entire communities. One of the most powerful ways to honor Breast Cancer Awareness Month is by offering support to those facing a diagnosis of any kind.

Here are a few meaningful ways to show care:

  • Listen without judgment. Sometimes the most powerful support is simply being present.

  • Offer practical help. Meals, rides to appointments, or help with errands can lift a huge burden.

  • Encourage screenings. Remind loved ones to stay on top of their preventive care.

  • Participate in awareness events. Community walks, fundraisers, and support groups are powerful reminders that no one fights alone.

Together, We Make a Difference

Awareness months like October remind us of the importance of taking charge of our health and supporting each other. Whether it’s scheduling your own screening, encouraging a loved one to do the same, or standing alongside someone affected by cancer, every action helps create a stronger, more compassionate community.
